    Appreciating the Arts

    Step back into the “tale as old as time” and watch one of Disney’s best movies live, with a beautiful girl, an angry beast, talking household items, and a single, magic rose. Come to the full Broadway musical of Beauty and the Beast at Columbia State Society’s Town Theater. This cast of more than fifty members is full of choreographed dancing, beautiful singing, and acting that will make you feel along with the characters. The show runs July 19-29 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 pm as well as a 2:30 pm show on Saturday and a 3:00 pm show on Sunday. Inspired by his childhood in Carolina lowcountry, Johnathan Green’s artwork conveys the values of his youth. Sharing the Chores: Works on Paper consists of original artwork, for example lithographs, serigraphs, and other objects, that you don’t want to miss!     Take another blast to the past all the way back to the 1950s and watch a musical set into the music-rich city of Tennessee. This story tells the tale of a DJ named Huey Calhoun, a local boy, who meets Felicia Farrell, a black singer, and their forbidden love as they both embark on their musical careers. Trustus Theatre presents Memphis on varying days from June 29 to July 28 with showtimes at 7:30 pm on Thursdays, 8:00 pm on Friday and Saturday, and 3:00 pm on Sunday. This musical is one that you really want to see, with a 2010 Tony for Best Musical and 2010 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. On July 22, there will also be a talk-back with the cast following the performance.  Prices are $30 on Thursdays and Sundays and $35 on Fridays and Saturdays.
