Get Ready for Columbia’s Back-To-School Drills & Skills

In part of Columbia’s “Let’s Move” initiative, Mayor Steve Benjamin recently announced the schedule for this year’s Drills and Skills event. Featuring instructional classes on a variety of sports, children can join friends in a fun activity that gets them ready for school. It’s a rare chance to hear and learn from some of the area’s best collegiate and high school coaches. Slated for August 12-16th, children can participate in basketball camps, tennis lessons, and golf courses. Each camp and lesson will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at several locations. Here are the details:

Columbia Basketball

Golf’s Debut

  • Held at James E. Clyburn Golf Center (2911, Slighs Ave)
  • Boys and girls (ages 6-17) are welcome to register

Basketball Camps

  • Hyatt Park — 950 Jackson Avenue (for boys, ages 6-9)
  • Greenview Park — 6700 David Street (for boys, ages 10-13)
  • M.L. King Park — 2300 Greene Street (for boys, ages 14-17)
  • R.C.S. Family Life Center at Reid Chapel AME  — 712 Gabriel Street (for girls, ages 6-17)

Tennis

  • Held at the Columbia Tennis Center — 1635 Whaley Street
  • For boys and girls (ages 6-17)

Deadine for Registration

Deadline for registration is Friday, August 9. You may download the Drills and Skills registration or visit one of Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Centers. For additional information regarding the upcoming Drills and Skills Clinics, you may call the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department at 803-545-3100.
