    Established in the 1890’s, Cottontown is the oldest planned neighborhood in the heart of downtown Columbia, South Carolina. Cottontown is listed as the “Bellevue Historic District” in the National Register of Historic Places. The community has remained unchanged in appearance and is protected as an architectural conservation district by the City of Columbia. The streets are lined with old hardwood trees that create a canopy of shade and make it a perfect place to take an afternoon walk. The majority of homes in Cottontown were built between 1925 and 1940 and still maintain their architectural integrity and historical charm. Most homes are single-family with a few multi-family residences mixed in. Home styles include a blend of Tudor revival, Colonial revival and Craftsman bungalows, with the bungalows being the most prevalent. Cottages and Romantic revivals add a picturesque charm to the community with decorative arches, intricate brickwork, and sophisticated gables. There are also a few two-story Foursquare homes scattered throughout.
