Love Architecture? Tour the South Carolina State House

Columbia has always had a unique touch with history, specifically around the South Carolina State House. With over 18 acres of beautiful landscaped grounds, the complex has been the center of lively debates, rallying points for civil rights, and inauguration ceremonies for governors. General Sherman even shelled the blue granite walls of the capitol during the Civil War. But one thing has always remained true — the State House is one of Columbia’s most beautiful forms of architecture. The natural shine of the copper dome and grand entryway have always stolen people’s attention.

    State House Architecture

The Greek Revival style of the State House features many ne0-classical elements that continue to work wonder on the local population. In the first floor, you can find Georgian marble walls, pink & white marble floors, granite columns, and an arched ceiling. The house is divided into 2 wings. The Governor’s office is in the west wing while the Lt. Governor’s is in the east wing. The main lobby possesses beautiful carvings, stained glass windows, and an interior view of the dome. The house and senate chambers open off the lobby.

If you look around the State House’s exterior, you’ll notice 6 bronze stars incorporated into the building. Those are the spots where Sherman’s cannons struck the capitol.
